MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID
ACCREDITATION PROGRAMMES

Mental Health First Aid Australia

Improve awareness, acceptance and understanding of mental health issues at work.

Mental Health First Aid is a programme which certifies participants as mental health first aiders in their workplaces. It does not equip people with the tools to diagnose and treat mental illness, but it provides practical information about key mental illnesses so that you can identify risks in the workplace, and provide assistance if someone is experiencing a mental health issue.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

CareerBuilders provides accredited MHFA Instructors to run Mental Health First Aid workshops to our clients. Participants receive a nationally recognised certificate qualification and a three year accreditation when they complete this highly informative and interactive 2 day programme. We can run in house courses for you in Australia or New Zealand or offer a calendar of public programmes at various East Coast of Australia locations.

Access our public workshop calendar for 2019. Contact us for more information on instructors in your location.

What’s in the Course?

The course teaches a first aid process for non-crisis intervention which can be applied to

• Someone experiencing depression
• Someone experiencing anxiety
• Someone experiencing psychosis
• Someone experiencing the effects of an alcohol or substance disorder

The course also provides a process for dealing with crisis situations for the above four categories. These crises are:

• Someone experiencing suicidal thoughts, feelings or behaviours
• Someone experiencing a panic attack
• Someone experiencing a severe psychotic episode
• Someone experiencing high levels of intoxication (sometimes with aggressive behaviour)

Who Should Attend this Programme?

This programme is of interest to those wishing to become mental health first aiders in their workplaces, as well as anyone interested in improving the knowledge and capability of an organisation in order to foster improved workplace mental health.

COURSES

2 Day Mental Health First Aid Course

Facilitated over two days, this course gives participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in the material and really practice the skills of Mental Health First Aid. This is by far the most effective method of delivery and our preferred method for this programme.

Blended Learning – MHFA for the Workplace Course

We also offer a Blended Learning Course format for the same Mental Health First Aid accreditation. This includes 4-5 hours of self-paced online learning, with a half day face to face facilitated component. For those people who find it difficult to attend a 2 day course, providing you have the discipline to complete the online component this can be a useful alternative format.

MHFA Refresher Course

At the end of the three year accreditation period, you will need to renew your accreditation by attending a half day refresher course. This will give you a further three year accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider. You will be sent a reminder that the accreditation period is coming to an end, and this will give you plenty of time to book on a refresher course.
