Loss of Life

 Suicide is the leading cause of death in Australia among 15-44 year olds. This represents a large part of someone’s working life.  The current suicide rate is 12.6 per 100,000 people in Australia. In 2017 we lost 3128 people to suicide. Sadly, this means a large organisation in Australia could be losing 2 to 20 employees a year to suicide. 

Loss of Income

 Australian businesses are losing $10.9 billion each year to mental health-related issues. Over the past year, 21 per cent of Australians have taken time off work due to feeling stressed, anxious, depressed or mentally unhealthy. Every morning, one in every six working-aged persons will enter their workplace and begin their day managing a diagnosed mental illness. A further one in six will be suffering from symptoms associated with ill mental health. 

Our Responsibility

Employers have a greater responsibility than ever before. 75 per cent of all Australian employees believe a mentally healthy workplace is one of the most important considerations when searching for future jobs, coming second only to remuneration.

Our Focus

At CareerBuilders, we see what’s going on in the world of work. And we are not prepared to accept it. Our role is to help build healthier workplaces by improving mental health literacy, and early intervention skills. The earlier we intervene, the faster the person recovers from mental ill health. We don’t want to wait for a crisis.
